Named after a character in West Side Story that he played
as a teenager, Snowboy entered the music world as a DJ at
17. Inspired by England's legendary black music club, The
Goldmine, his early taste featured Jazz, Funk and Soul but
soon veered towards the Latin Fusion sound that was
gaining prominence in the late70s/early80s.
Bitten by the bug, Snowboy bought a set of congas and
after lessons and hard practice became an accomplished
percussionist. He began producing his own tracks as well as
recording percussion for other artists, including Coldcut and
Lisa Stansfield. A regular on the mic at the UK's first rap
night, The Language Club, his debut single featured a B-side
called 'When Snowboy's On The Mike'. By the late 80's as
one of London's leading Jazz Dance djs, Snowboy, was at
the heart of Gilles Peterson's new imprint Acid Jazz, a term
coined as a piss take of the Acid House scene.
He released his debut album Ritmo Snowbo. He has since
recorded or compiled eleven albums, as well as touring with
various jazz and Latin combos like the James Taylor Quartet
and is widely regarded as one of the world's leading
promoters of Afro-Cuban Latin Music. These days he hosts
the UK's No.1 Jazz Dance session called The Hi-Hat in
Madam Jo-Jo's. It's a pleasure to have him.
