The Rock + Roll Rescue Squad is delighted to announce the first date for our 3 day weekender to celebrate 13 years of Strictly Handbag. We will be running in 3 different venues across the city on from Saturday 27th October to Monday 29th culminating with an exclusive DJ set by one of the finest guitarists in the world from possibly our favourite band ever, Mr Will Sergeant from Echo + the Bunnymen.
There are guitar players that play guitar, and then there are those who use guitars to sculpt sound, to hypnotize, to create worlds in to which the mind can escape. With Echo and the Bunnymen Will Sergeant reintroduced swirling psychedelia to the angular world of post punk. Sergeant’s chiming, swirling echoes have wafted through indie music, inspiring the likes of John Squire (Stone Roses) and, well, deaf just about every indie kid who ever hid behind his fringe.
In a world of street cults and music media pigeon holing The Bunnymen maintained a scouse aloofness, avoiding post punk labelling yet achieving massive critical and chart success. More than anything Echo and the Bunnymen provided a dark corner in which to hide from the pastel glow of mainstream 8o’s pop.
On October the 29th Will Sergeant is coming to Dublin to help us celebrate Strictly Handbag’s thirteenth birthday, that’s right our little handbag is a teenager now.
If Will’s sets from Liverpool and London based club night “Friction” are anything to go by you expect everything from a Psychedelic Freak-out to Kingstown Skank, with some Nu Wave, no wave and even Peter Cook and Dudley Moore’s “Bedazzled” mixed in.
